d'Amico International Shipping (DIS) says its subsidiary, d'Amico Tankers Ltd (Ireland) will buy two newbuild handysize tankers that promise fuel savings of six to seven tonnes per day compared with older designs.

The vessels also allow for the transportation of eight to nine different products, which will help the carrier provide increased operating flexibility for its customers.

The 50,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) tankers will cost $36.6 million each and will be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co. Ltd. through an affiliate in Vietnam, with delivery scheduled for late 2016.

d'Amico Tankers Ltd. had four eco-design newbuilding vessels delivered in January and February of this year, and it has a total of 10 such shipbuilding contracts.

"DIS' newbuilding strategy is going to be a key point also in 2014," said DIS CEO Marco Fiori.

"By adding new vessels able to carry different products simultaneously and safely, and by holding the costs down and ensuring a reduced environmental impact, DIS is constantly showing its strong ability to not only be more competitive on an international level, but also to perfectly understand the needs of a changing market."

DIS said in January that it was launching new eco-ships in anticipation of CO2 emissions limits that will be implemented in 2025.
