Greece-based bulker company Star Bulk Carriers Corp. [NASDAQ:SBLK] (Star Bulk) says it has received the first of six carriers that it says will be the most fuel-efficient ships of their kind.

Japan Marine United (JMU) built the 182,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) M/V Peloreus and will deliver the other five vessels between now and the third quarter of 2015.

Star Bulk will deploy the M/V Peloreus on the spot market to take advantage of its modern design and fuel efficiency.

The ship's delivery, along with the acquisition of two Kamsarmax ships from Heron Ventures Ltd., will bring Star Bulk to a fleet of 33 dry bulk vessels, and the company has also contracted 36 more newbuilds with delivery by early 2016.

Star Bulk announced earlier this year that it would charter two fuel-saving ships from CSSC (Hong Kong) Shipping Company Limited (CSSC).
