Alphaliner: Idle Containership Count Heading for All-Time High by End of 2015
The number of idle containerships globally of over 500 teu has increased to 329 units, or 1.4 million TEU, as at the end of November, Alphaliner has said in its latest Weekly Report.
That represents 7.0 percent of the total fleet, it said, and is a gain from 1.2 million TEU in mid-November.
Both levels were five year high's at their respective point in the month, with the market now "set to exceed its all-time high of 1.5 Mteu by the end of this year".
However Alphaliner data shows that, as a percentage, this would still be less than has been previously witnessed, which was over 10 percent of the total global fleet for periods of 2009 and 2010.
Alphaliner also noted that larger box ships were being idled, with only ships of below 2,000 TEU posting a slight decrease.
Panamax vessels of 3,000 to 5,100 TEU capacity had the worst prospects, it said, due not only to falling cargo volumes on several routes, but also pressure from vessels being cascaded down from other routes looking to accommodate larger newbuilds.
"The forthcoming Christmas season will do little to stimulate demand, adding to the market's overall misery," said Alphaliner.
Last month Maersk Line, the world's biggest box carrier, revealed plans to cut at least 4,000 jobs, reduce network capacity, and delay investment in new capacity - including passing on an option for six super-sized 19,630 TEU Triple-E class vessels.
