Portuguese Ports to be Hit by Two Weeks of Strike Action
Portuguese dock worker union, Sindicato dos Estivadores, Trabalhadores do Tráfego e Conferentes Marítimos (SETC), Thursday issued notice of planned strike action beginning at 12 a.m. April 20, 2016 to the end of work day May 5 at the ports of Lisbon, Setúbal, and Figueira da Foz.
The Port of Lisbon will see stoppage at all of its terminals involving movement of cargo, while Setúbal and Figueira da Foz will stop work on cargo ships rerouted from Lisbon.
The strike action is said to be intended to influence the settlement of a new collective bargaining agreement between port workers and operators after the latest round of talks disintegrated Monday.
Thursday's strike notice is reported to be part of a labour dispute that has been ongoing between the union and the port operators over the last three years, and marks the latest of a series of such action threatened by the union since November 2015.
