The Standard Club says it has seen a general increase in the number and level of fines for violations of environmental regulations, mostly under Annex I - Regulations for the Prevention of Pollution by Oil, Hellenic Shipping News reports.

The trend is said to be especially present in the USA, where numerous Annex I fines were said to have run into the multimillions of dollars.

For some cases, those in violation have faced imprisonment, including the officers and crew directly responsible for the MARPOL violation, and senior managers of the company.

In June, marine insurer Skuld issued a new advisory reminding owners and charterers to stay updated on ISO fuel standards in light of changes to Emission Control Area (ECA) sulfur limits under MARPOL Annex VI.

In January, Skuld advised members that enforcement of new ECA rules "have teeth" and will be strictly enforced.
