The International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA) today said the underlying topic of debate at their conference next week will be "is the customer getting what he pays for."

Writing in an emailed press release, the association said there will be debate on how IBIA can encourage measures to be put in place to raise standards ranging from quality, quantity, terms and conditions, to the standard of education and training.

"Many questions are currently being asked of the bunker industry at a time when the bunker industry is experiencing rapid growth," IBIA wrote.

IBIA's annual convention takes place in Hong Kong next week. November 5-7, 2013, and will be opened by Hong Kong's Under-Secretary for the Environment, Mrs Christine Loh, who will outline the government's vision for the port and speak about the importance of the environment for port cities in the future.

Arthur Bowring, managing director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association will also be outlining the steps that the industry is taking to address Hong Kong's air quality.

"We greatly look forward to welcoming our members to Hong Kong and getting their input into the future direction of the association," said IBIA chief executive Peter Hall.

"IBIA needs to build on its role as THE voice of the bunker industry and to help policy makers with especially the technical aspects of legislation relating to marine fuels."

Ship & Bunker's Inside Opinion earlier this month explored the topic of getting the amount of bunkers that have been paid for.
