Propulsion Dynamics said Monday that the upcoming 2013 introduction of mandatory Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has helped drive a 20% rise in customers using its CASPER hull and propeller performance monitoring service.

"CASPER is perfect fit for SEEMP. By creating a thorough implementation of measures, and continual improvements of technical fuel efficiency, the Return On Investment (ROI) is straightforward," Managing Director Christian Brobeck said in the emailed press release.

The company also believes more shipowners and operators are turning to hull and propeller performance monitoring because of rising fuel costs and increasingly stringent emissions regulations.

The comments came as the firm announced the completion of its 5,000th report from the service.

Propulsion Dynamics say that CASPER, or Computerized Analysis of Ship PERformance, compares ship performance from hull and propeller fouling with a clean, smooth hull and propeller from sea trials. This generates accurate figures for speed and fuel consumption due to basic roughness and fouling.

The firm also has a tool to provide ideal trim based on speed, weather, and loading that does not require installation or calibration of sensors as it is based on a physical model of the vessel.

Rasmus Kjaer, General Technical Manager at chemical transportation company Eitzen who use the CASPER+Trim combination, said "with this tool we will achieve our new goals for fuel saving."

SEEMP will become mandatory for all vessels over 400 gross tonnes at their first renewal or intermediary survey after January 1, 2013.

Those ships will have to have an International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC), one requirement of which is the presence of a SEEMP on board.
