U.S. based Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced Friday that it is now offering up to $1.3 Million in Federal funding for projects supporting vessel emissions reductions including scrubbing technology, and alternative energy.

Funding for a maximum of 50 percent of total project costs will be available for U.S.-flagged vessel owners, operators, or sponsors and made available under two separate applications.

The first is focused on exhaust gas cleaning demonstration projects that remove pollutants from the stacks of marine vessels, while the second will focus on projects that demonstrate vessel emissions reductions through the use of alternative fuels or energy sources such as LNG or fuel cells, and improvements in vessel energy efficiency through use of conservation technology and practices.

MARAD says it intends to use the information from these projects to assess possible incentive schemes to encourage vessel emissions reduction and the use of alternative energy.

The closing date for proposal submission is on June 11, 2015.

Last month, MARAD issued an offer of $900,000 to fund LNG conversion studies
