Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) has ordered two more of its fuel efficient, low polluting Trillium Class vessels, the company has announced.

The self-unloading gearless bulkers will be 36,100 dwt Seaway max size and built at the Yangfan Shipyard in Zhejiang Province, China.

CSL said it expects them to enter service in the spring of 2014, and has an option for the construction of two additional vessels for delivery some time during the 2014 shipping season.

The Montreal based firm says the Trillium Class, which is a trademark of The CSL Group, features "designs and systems that benefit the environment and customers alike," including increased fuel efficiency, and reduced emissions of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter.

It also uses a water-lubricated stern tube bearing, which eliminates the pollution associated with oil lubricated bearings.

"Investing in sustainable technologies makes good business sense. It creates a competitive edge with state of the art operational and energy efficiencies," said Dan McCarthy, CSL Vice-President, Marketing and Customer Service.

The news brings the total of Trillium Class vessels under construction for CSL to six.

The company first announced the Trillium Class name in July 2011, when two of the vessels were under construction for delivery in the fall of 2012.

CSL exercised its option for two further vessels in September last year, both Seaway max 35,500 dwt self-unloaders, with those vessels scheduled for delivery in the Spring of 2013.

The vessels will all be operated by Canada Steamship Lines and its Beverly, Massachusetts based sister company CSL International.
