TOTE will launch the world's first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered containership on April 18, 2015, American shipbuilding company General Dynamics NASSCO has announced.

The vessel, which is the first of two, was built by NASSCO, and will also be launched at its shipyard in San Diego

Once completed, both 3,100-TEU Marlin-class ships will be operated by Sea Star Line along a route between Florida and Puerto Rico.

The double-hulled ships will be equipped with ballast water systems in addition to running on LNG, "which will significantly decrease emissions while increasing fuel efficiency as compared to conventionally-powered ships," says NASSCO.

The ships are currently scheduled to be delivered in late-2015.

Early this year, TOTE also signed long-term agreements with WesPac Midstream LLC and Pivotal LNG, Inc to be the suppliers of LNG for both ships.
