Four diesel-electric ice-class platform service vessels (PSVs) ordered by Atlantic Towing (ATL) will feature a variety of fuel-saving features, according to Damen Shipyards Group (Damen), which is building the vessels.

The PSVs will operate around the Hibernia and Hebron oil fields off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada in service of ExxonMobil Canada Properties and Hibernia Management and Development Co. Ltd.'s operations there.

"The inclusion of Diesel Electric propulsion is a key attribute, providing efficiency, flexibility and reliability under varied operational conditions in remote locations," said Jan van Hogerwou, Damen's North America manager.

"For the crew DE delivers a far quieter working environment and a more comfortable vessel."

The vessels will also feature slender hull lines, azimuth stern drives, fuel-efficient generators, and selective catalytic reduction systems for lower fuel costs and emissions.

The first of the PSVs will start operations in the second half of 2016.

Havyard Group SA (Havyard) of Norway announced in April that it would build a battery-powered diesel-electric PSV that could reduce fuel use by 30 to 40 percent.
