General Dynamics NASSCO (NASSCO) has launched the second of two liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships built for TOTE Inc., the shipyard announced this week.

Once delivered, the 3,100-TEU Marlin-class Perla del Caribe will join its sister ship, the Isla Bella, in transporting cargo between Florida and Puerto Rico

The two ships are understood to be the first LNG-powered containerships in the world.

According to NASSCO, the vessels will cut particulate matter by 98 percent and carbon dioxide emissions by 72 percent, "the equivalent of removing more than 15,700 cars from the road."

The Perla del Caribe is expected to be delivered in late 2015.

It was reported earlier this year that the Isla Bella was lunched in April from NASSCO's shipyard in San Diego
