The first private liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering station in China will be built in Zhoushan, with completion of the first phase scheduled for March 2016, Chinese shipping industry news site SinoShip News reports.

The station will be built by Hebei, China independent gas distributor ENN Energy Holdings for a total cost of RMB4.75 billion ($775.7 million).

The first phase of the project will have a receiving capacity of 3 million tonnes.

The Zhoushan government says the project could help promote Zhoushan port as the LNG center of Northeast Asia.

China Marine Bunker Supply Company (Chimbusco) said last fall that most Chinese shipowners are unlikely to switch from fuel oil to LNG bunkers, given the absence of Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in Asia, but the Chinese government has been pushing for some LNG bunkering projects, including operations on the Yangtze River.
