Classification society DNV GL and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) say they have signed an agreement to work together on research and development projects.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) calls for the two parties to work together on liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology, environmental improvements to ports, marine emissions reduction and fuel efficiency through technical improvements to ships, and organization of leadership forums in the Singapore maritime community.

"Singapore has emerged as one of the key centres for innovation in the shipping world, especially in terms of promoting technologies and systems which develop and promote green outcomes" said DNV GL President and CEO Henrik Madsen.

"We have built up a relationship with the MPA over the past several years, as we have both jointly and separately championed projects which have sought to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency in shipping, and this MOU will help us to further our relationship."

Madsen said DNV GL is committed to investing in research and development, including long-term projects promoting innovation.

"The signing of this MOU signifies a shared vision to drive our maritime industry research efforts," said MPA Chief Executive Andrew Tan.

"It will also help position Singapore as a centre of excellence for maritime research.

"I'm confident that this partnership will grow stronger and contribute to the overall growth of the maritime sector."

After being formed through the merger of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Germanischer Lloyd SE (GL) last year, DNV GL announced a commitment to R&D efforts.
