The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Wednesday announced that a workshop was held to raise awareness of IMO's regulatory regime for improving energy efficiency and controlling green house gas (GHG) emissions from ships.

Astrid Dispert and a team of consultants is said to have represented IMO at the three-day MARPOL Annex VI and Technology Transfer workshop, which took place in Johor, Malaysia from May 16 to 18, and was attended by participants from Malaysian governmental departments, academia, and other associated bodies.

The event was organised under IMO's Global Maritime Energy Efficiency Partnerships (GloMEEP) project, a joint effort of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and IMO, which is aimed at encouraging the adoption of energy efficiency measures for shipping in developing countries.

With Malaysia as one of the 10 GloMEEP lead pilot countries, the workshop is said to have been co-hosted by the Marine Department Malaysia and Johor Port Authority.

They even included an tour of the Port of Tanjung Pelepas container terminal, where participants were informed about the port's energy efficiency initiatives and green policy.

In December, the IMO announced that the GloMEEP's first national workshop was held in Batumi, Georgia, which focused on raising awareness of energy efficiency regulations of Chapter 4.
