Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) on Monday said it had won an order for three liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers worth KRW 664 billion ($621 million).

The ships, which it was said will use "eco-ship technology" to improve performance and reduce emissions, are to be constructed for an undisclosed Asian owner and are scheduled for delivery at the end of August 2018, IHS Maritime 360 reported.

"As LNG exports will increase in the US, Australia and East Africa region, more than 30 LNG carriers per year will be ordered," the company said.

"SHI has secured the world's No 1 market share when it comes to winning orders for LNG carriers. We are sure that we will continuously lead the market."

The three 174,000-cubic-metre carriers are to have dual-fuel engines, along with other technology that will give high sail performance and reduced CO2 emissions.

The vessels will be used to ship shale gas from the U.S. to Asia

SHI is currently the world's second largest shipbuilder.

The company is also currently locked in competition with another Korean shipbuilder and one Chinese company to build Royal Dutch Shell plc's new LNG bunker ship.
