Deltamarin Ltd. said it is providing design work for two highly fuel-efficient Post Panamax car carriers ordered by Swedish shipowner Wallenius Lines.

The ro-ro pure car truck carriers (PCTCs), which will have a capacity equivalent to 8,000 cars, are being built by China's Tianjin Xingang Shipbuilding Heavy Industry, and the contract includes an option for two more of the vessels.

The vessel design includes a hull optmised for low fuel use, ability to traverse rough seas, and worldwide operations.

Deltamarin has been working with the shipyard, which previously focused on mainstream vessel types such as bulk carriers, to extend its expertise into more sophisticated types of ships.

The yard is already building 10 bulk carriers using Deltamarin's B.Delta37 design for other buyers.

Some analysts say Chinese shipyards have suffered economically compared with competitors such as South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI) because their offerings are generally for more basic ship types with less focus on fuel efficiency.
