Classification society DNV GL has announced it is looking to grow its Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) consulting client base in South East Asia through a new LNG unit to be based in Singapore.

Energy demand in the region is expected to grow at twice the rate of the rest of the world, said DNV GL, explaining why it sees the move as strategically important.

The body has appointed Arve Johan Kalleklev as its new Regional Manager for Oil & Gas in South East Asia.

"By establishing the LNG and Gas Consulting unit, DNV GL is demonstrating its continued commitment to Singapore's ambition of becoming Asia's natural gas hub," said Kalleklev.

DNV GL estimates that $460 billion of investments will be needed in South East Asia's gas and LNG infrastructure by 2035 to meet energy demand.

"This will secure robust growth in LNG supply. The Pacific Basin has some of the largest exporters of LNG, but also some of the oldest plants-many more than 20 years old," said Kalleklev.

Kalleklev starts in his new position last week, having previously headed DNV GL Oil & Gas's Marine Structures department in Norway

LNG demand is expected to double in Indonesia by 2020, according to Pertamina, meaning infrastructure improvements will be required.
