Shipowners and operators are increasingly under pressure when it comes to controlling fuel costs, according to maritime software firm NAPA Japan Ltd, as it announced Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd (K-Line) had signed a deal to install NAPA's eco-efficiency software on three of its ships.

K-Line was said to have been one of the first companies to trial the ClassNK-NAPA GREEN software, which helps ships to measure the performance and fuel consumption of vessels.

"At NAPA we understand that ship operators are under increasing public, regulatory and financial pressure to control their fuel costs and boost environmental credentials," said Naoki Mizutani, managing director of NAPA, which is owned by Japanese classification society ClassNK.

"ClassNK-NAPA GREEN is proving itself in all areas of this including delivering proven bunker cost savings and feedback to ship designs to improve newbuilds in the future."

The installations, which will occur in the summer of 2015, follow a successful trial aboard an 8,600 TEU K-Line container vessel early this year, said ClassNK,.

NAPA was bought by ClassNK earlier this year in a bid to expand its software services.
