APL Ship Wins Green Award
An APL vessel has received the first Green Ship of the Year award presented at the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)'s 2013 International Marine Awards, the company announced.
The 10,700 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) ship container ship the APL Yangshan, which operates on an Asia-Europe route, has fuel-saving features including an electronically controlled main engine and cold ironing capacity, as well as a ballast water treatment system.
The ship's Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is 33 percent better than the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)'s EEDI reference line for ships of its type and size.
"We are very honoured to be presented the award, and to be accorded strong industry recognition of the environmental benchmark that APL has set," said APL President Kenneth Glenn.
"In an industry where bunker fuel is a big part of operational costs, and at a time when fuel costs are expected to remain high, it is imperative that we continue with our efforts to enhance the energy efficiency of our ships in order to remain competitive while providing our customers with quality service."
The Green Ship of the Year Award was created as a new category at the awards this year to recognise Singapore-flagged vessels with designs that reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
APL has said that reducing fuel consumption is critical to its success.
