Evergreen Line said in a press release Wednesday it has christened its first "L-type" fuel-efficient containership the Ever Lambent at a ceremony at Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in South Korea.

According to the press release, the L-types are built from high-tensile steel and designed to save fuel consumption and cut carbon emissions through a design incorporating "optimised hull form and minimum ballast water."

The ships are equipped with an electronic-controlled fuel injection engine, enabling energy-efficient navigation for slow steaming.

Evergreen Group said in 2010 it ordered 20 L-type vessels from Samsung Heavy Industries to be delivered by 2014, with a further 10 vessels ordered from Taiwan Shipbuilding Corp. to be delivered between 2013 to 2015.

The 334 metre long Ever Lambent has an 8,452 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) capacity and can cruise at a speed up to 24.5 knots.

Owned by Evergreen Marine (UK) Ltd, the Evergreen Group expects the vessel to join Far East - Europe route in August.

Evergreen Group says it operates the fourth largest container fleet in the world, with over 180 ships and a capacity of approximately 650,000 TEU.
