Canadian industrial battery manufacturer Corvus Energy and Spanish shipyard La Naval have unveiled plans for new ferry that will be able to be powered by either low sulfur bio diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), or solar energy.

Being called the "greenest ever ferry in Holland", the 1,750 person and 350 vehicle capacity vessel, to be named Texelstroom, is being built for Dutch ferry operator TESO and will run between Texel Island and the Holland mainland.

Some 700 square meters of solar panels will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels along with 1.6MWh of battery capacity provided from 252 Corvus Energy AT6500 48V lithium ion modules, enough for the ferry to run on battery power alone in case of emergency, the companies said.

"We are very pleased that Corvus' energy storage system was selected for this innovative and leading edge vessel," said Andrew Morden, Interim CEO of Corvus Energy.

"We are very proud to partner with LaNaval in making the Texelstroom the world's greenest passenger ferry."

Mr. Cees de Waal, Directeur, TESO, explained: "TESO's investment in Texelstroom shows our ongoing commitment to increasing efficiency in our systems. These efficiencies will not only benefit the company and customers in terms of reduced costs, but also the environment in terms of reduced emissions."

Last month Corvus Energy (Corvus) says it is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy with the help of funding by Green Marine Capital (GMC).
