Sea trials have found that TUI Cruises' new eco-vessel, Mein Schiff 3, uses about 30 percent less energy than other similar-sized cruise ships, industry news site MarineLink reports.

The ship, built by STX Shipyard in Turku, Finland, uses a dynamic positioning control system from Finland's Navis Engineering, which helps reduce fuel use, particularly during tendering operations.

Mein Schiff 3 was delivered in May and will serve the German premium class cruise market.

A sister ship, Mein Schiff 4, will follow Mein Schiff 3 next year, according to the website of TUI Cruises' parent company, TUI AG.

Fuel efficiency and emissions reductions are becoming a more urgent issue for ship owners, include cruise companies, operating in Europe, as new rules for Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) get closer to coming into force next year.
