Danish-German ferry operator Scandlines says it is expecting the European Union (EU) to award the company €6.3 million ($7.11 million) for the company to install scrubbers and a hybrid system on two of its new vessels that cross between Rostock and Gedser, as well as to boost environmentally friendly infrastructure at both ports.

Scandlines says a key goal of the project is to optimise the fuel consumption of the two vessels, M/V Berlin and M/V Copenhagen, as well as comply with environmental regulations that have been implemented in the region.

The company explains that these goals will be achieved by installing "Scandlines' award-winning hybrid propulsion system," said to have already installed on four of its passenger ferries on the Puttgarden-Rødby route.

Scandlines reports that it will also be installing closed loop exhaust gas cleaning solutions on the two ships, said to be capable of reducing the sulfur emissions by at least 90 percent.

"We are very pleased and proud of this seal of approval from the EU, said Søren Poulsgaard Jensen, CEO of Scandlines.

"This is yet a great recognition of the work we are doing to implement green initiatives on our routes and to make our ferry operations even more environmentally friendly in the future."

Scandlines says that its ambitions to make it operations more environmentally friendly will continue with its green strategy, which it says is "ultimately zero emission; that is, a propulsion system for the ferries without any emissions."

In February, Scandlines announced that it had joined the sulfur regulation enforcement lobby group, Trident Alliance.
