Danish-German ferry operator Scandlines has joined the sulfur regulation enforcement lobby group, Trident Alliance, ShippingWatch reports.

It is understood that Scandlines is Trident's newest member.

Scandlines CEO Søren Poulsgaard Jensen said he was pleased to be a member of the alliance, and noted that the firm had a "precise and ambitious plan" for how its entire fleet would meet the new sulfur requirements "long before January 1, 2015".

As of January this year, shippers within Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) in Europe and North America are required to burn fuel with a sulfur content no higher than 0.10 percent by weight, or use an equivalent method of compliance.

As part of the Trident Alliance, Scandlines will be part of a global network of shipping industry players aiming to ensure consistent enforcement of the sulfur regulations.

"Scandlines supports the initiative in order to ensure and engage in the implementation of the regulations in a way that benefits both environment and fair competition," said the company, according to a separate report.

In 2013, the European Union (EU) said it was set to provide €6.4 million ($8.8 million) to support Scandlines' investment in hybrid propulsion and wet scrubber technology.

Last year, Scandlines was understood to have received a further €2.3 million ($3.1 million) in EU money for the retrofitting of two ferries plying its Puttgarden-Rødby route, to include hybrid propulsion systems.

In addition, it is understood Scandlines has fitted vessels with scrubbers.

In January, P&I club Skuld warned that ECA rules would be rigorously enforced and "have teeth".
