Becker Marine Systems (Becker Marine) says plans to bring a liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered cold ironing barge to the Port of Rotterdam are "well underway."

The company already has one such "LNG hybrid barge", Hummel, which has been supplying LNG-generated power in the Port of Hamburg for over a year now.

The solution allows vessels to plug in to power generated by LNG, rather than using their onboard diesel engines, thus reducing at-berth emissions.

While Hummel has been supplying power to cruise ships, having recently restarted operations for the start of the new season, Becker Marine sees the service expanding to container ships, bulkers, and tankers.

"Discussions with the Port of Rotterdam for the implementation of another barge are already well under way," said Dirk Lehmann, managing director of Becker Marine.

The company notes that the responsibility for Hummel's operations and product sales are to be turned over to Hybrid Port Energy, a subsidiary of Becker Marine.

Last week, Ship & Bunker reported that Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) has hailed its in-port use of LNG for two vessels berthed in the Port of Hamburg.
