London-based Parker Kittiwake's subsidiary Kittiwake Procal Ltd has doubled production of its emissions monitors ahead of the implementation of Emission Control Areas (ECA) in 2015, the company announced in an emailed statement.

Parker Kittiwake, which is owned by the Parker Hannifin Corporation, said that the increase of its Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) was due to the "sizeable increase" in demand among the industry.

The company also said that it has seen an "exponential increase" in orders over the last year.

“As the Jan 2015 ECA deadline looms, growing numbers of ship-owners are installing scrubbers to achieve compliance," said Chris Daw, a spokesman for Procal.

"“Ship-owners will be soon be under significant pressure to prove compliance or else face significant fines they can ill-afford."

The company said that it works with nine other scrubber manufacturers, and that CEMS orders have risen parallel to scrubber orders.

As a result, Procal said that it has invested in production equipment and database automation, in addition to reducing lead-times and extending manufacturing hours.

The systems are designed to measure six exhaust gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

Beginning in 2015, ECA regulations will limit the sulfur content in marine fuel used in ECAs to 0.10 percent by weight.

Different agencies have so far struggled with how to best ensure compliance in the upcoming year, with "massive non-compliance" having been predicted last year for Europe.
