Rolls-Royce Plc says it has delivered the first ship using its "Environship" design, which reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 40 percent.

The liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship, Eidsvaag Pioner, was delivered to Eidsvaag AS of Norway from the Vard Aukra shipyard and will be used to deliver feed to fish farms around the Norwegian coast.

In addition to the LNG engines, the ships uses a wave-piercing bow, the Promas combined rudder and propeller, and a hybrid shaft generator that optmises the use of electricity.

Along with reducing CO2 emissions, Rolls-Royce say the LNG engines reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by about 90 percent and virtually eliminate sulfur oxide (Sox) emission.

"The Environship has now moved from concept to reality with the successful delivery of the first ship," said Neil Gilliver, Rolls-Royce, President - Merchant.

"We firmly believe that the only way to make significant reductions in emissions and fuel costs is to combine a range of innovative technologies into one ship."

Two larger cargo ships using the Environship design are being built in China for Norway's Nor Lines.

Rolls-Royce announced last fall that it was working with Lauro Shipping of Italy to design ferries based on the Enviroship concept.
