IBIA Africa (IBIA) says it will be hosting its second regional forum in Cape Town from September 14 to 16, which will be focused on highlighting the importance of "establishing a good bunkering hub."

"Currently port competitiveness in the African region is at a tipping point, with the number of expansion and developmental projects taking place," said IBIA.

The organsation notes that the forum will provide an opportunity for the region's bunker industry to network and share ideas and lessons learned.

IBIA says the forum will present a strong panel of bunkering experts, answering questions from delegates on a wide variety of topics, including legal, operational, environmental and commercial issues, and will see event sponsor Aegean Marine Petroleum speak on its newly launched  bunkering services in Algoa Bay.

The agenda is said to include discussion on the world and regional supply scene, impacts of International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, a global cap on sulfur content in bunkers, fuel quality, bunker delivery notes (BDNs), and compliance and enforcement, as well as discussion on the impacts of supply and finance on the bunker market.

IBIA says the forum will also examine issues related to bunker development and the environment, including counter pollution preparedness and marine emergency management, as well as the international legal framework for pollution from ships.

In March, Ship & Bunker reported that Africa could see the emergence of a number of new bunkering hot spots, as ports across the continent vie to become new regional logistics hubs.
