Following a brawl onboard the MV Benita that ended in a grounding and a bunker spill off southeast Mauritius, oil booms have now been deployed, clean up efforts are underway, and the bulker is now being debunkered, local media reports.

17 of the now reported 125 metric tonnes (mt) of fuel oil onboard the Handymax are said to have been removed so far by Greece-based Five Oceans Salvage, with debunkering efforts expected to continue for another two to five days.

On Tuesday, Ship & Bunker noted that at least one local source indicated the vessel was carrying around 145 metric tonnes (mt) of fuel oil and 30 mt of diesel at the time of the incident.

Fuel oil removed from the grounded vessel will then be transported for treatment by the Virgin Oil Company (Mauritius) Ltd (Virgin Oil Company Mauritius), reports say, adding that efforts to free MV Benita could take more than a month.
