Lloyds Register will host an event next month to share information on the use of glycerine fuel for ships and workboats, according to a notice posted by industry news site Maritime Journal.

Glycerine is already used in standard diesel engine Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators, and researchers are considering its potential as a marine fuel.

The event, including a keynote speech by hybrid power expert Ken Wittamore of Triskel Marine, will cover technological and regulatory issues and the testing of a glycerine fuelled engine under Lloyds Register guidance.

Other speakers will include Simon Powell, operations director for Marine South East; Tim Wilson, fuel oil bunkering specialist at Lloyd's register; John McNeal, physicist consultant to Aquafuel Research Ltd,; and Mark Bobby, marine manager of Gardline Geosurvey, and attendees will be invited to share their thoughts and experiences.

The event is part of a project known as Glycerine fuel for Engines and Marine Sustainability (GLEAMS) that involves Lloyds Register and other UK businesses.

It will be held on Thursday, February 27 at Lloyds Register in London.

GLEAMS has said the use of glycerine as a fuel is worth investigating because it is widely available as a byproduct of the biofuel industry and it can be used in diesel engines with minimal modifications.
