Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) today said its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker barge is set to be operational in Northwest Europe this summer, Platts reports.

Arjan Stavast, head of Shell's global marine LNG team, at the LNG Bunkering Summit in Amsterdam, said the barge will be able to deliver LNG at a rate of 1,000 cubic metres (cbm) per hour.

Currently, European LNG bunkering is noted to be largely carried out through truck to ship operations - a method said to be too slow for tankers and large container ships.

Shell suggests that global LNG bunker demand could reach 30 million - 35 million metric tonnes (mt) per year by 2040.
