DNV GL Tuesday announced that Oriental Jubilee, Unique Shipping Group's newest liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier, has become the first vessel to be awarded DNV GL's SCRUBBER READY notation.

In order to meet future emission control regulations, the 84,000 m3 Oriental Jubilee and its sister ship have been prepared for the installation of a hybrid scrubber system that can also be connected with multiple exhaust gas inlets from the vessels' main engines, three diesel engines, and the boiler.

"Making sure our vessels are prepared for current and upcoming emissions regulations is very important to us. The SCRUBBER READY notation enables us to make the necessary provisions in the design, so that the installation of a scrubber in the future is a more straightforward operation," stated Unique Shipping Group.

DNV GL says its SCRUBBER READY notation considers all factors relevant to scrubber installation, including space and stability requirements, fire safety, piping, corrosion resistance, and impacts on the main engine.

The notation is said to help lessen off-hire time and costs of scrubber retrofits in the future, and provides the shipowner with advisory services from DNV GL, such as building business cases, risk assessments for design, installation, commissioning, and hardware-in-the-loop testing of the control system.

"The system was chosen because of its operating flexibility. It enables wash water to be discharged into the sea in open loop mode, but also includes a liquid recirculation system in order to operate in closed loop mode," said Swee Yin Wong, Senior Surveyor at DNV GL's Ulsan station in Korea.

"This is important if you operate in fresh water or low-alkalinity areas, as well as in areas, where discharging wash water is prohibited."

The Oriental Jubilee is noted to have made its maiden voyage to the Persian Gulf in mid-June, and is scheduled for delivery, along with its sister vessel, in September 2017.

DNV GL announced the new notation in March, with Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO, DNV GL – Maritime, commenting: "there is no doubt that stricter emissions regulations for sulfur oxides are here to stay."
