Shell LNG is set to work with Project Forward to study bunker requirements and supply options for globally trading liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered bulk carriers, tankers, and container vessels.

Project Forward is an international group of shipping industry companies and organisations, led by Greece-based bulker owner Arista Shipping (Arista), aiming to develop a commercially feasible liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered bulk carrier capable of complying with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index 2025 standards.

The project is also noted to be aimed at developing LNG-powered ships with long sailing ranges that only need to refuel at major ports, as well as LNG bunker supply services to support that vision.

Arista says that, alongside Project Forward's goal to launch its LNG-fuelled carrier "within the next few years," concentrating LNG bunkering in major ports will enable emerging demand to be met.

"Merchant shipping is under increased pressure of tight regulations on emissions from a range of sources and this will continue in future," said Alexander P Panagopulos, Chairman & CEO of Arista.

"LNG is a cleaner burning marine fuel for shipping which can help ship owners and operators to reduce emissions of CO2, sulfur, particulates and nitrogen oxides."

Last week, Shell announced that the 7,500m³ multipurpose LNG carrier Coral Methane was loaded with LNG at the Port of Rotterdam's LNG Gate terminal on September 19.
