Project Forward, an international group aiming to develop a commercially feasible liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered bulk carrier, could see their vessel hit the water as early as 2018, according project lead Athens-based Arista Shipping.

Speaking to Tradewinds recently, Arista president Alexander P Panagopulos told the news service that "within a two-year period, we're either going to see a 'Forward' ship in the water or orders being placed."

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the design is based on Deltamarin's B.Delta design for ships between 82,000 DWT and 210,000 DWT, and using France-based GTT's LNG containment system.

Panagopulos said the first vessel would be 82,000 DWT and be able to sail 12,000 nautical miles, or 40 days, before needing to refuel.

"Innovation for the sake of innovation is not what we do," Panagopulos said.

"We have a design that is commercially viable and that has no expiration date."

In December, Ship & Bunker reported that Nick Brown, Brand and External Relations Manager at Lloyd's Register had said that opportunities in LNG bunkering are highly dependent on the financial returns for the alternative fuel.
