DNV GL Wednesday announced that it has signed a partnership agreement with quality assurance organisation, the Green Award Foundation, which will see the company offer 10 percent discounts to ship owners and managers for DNV GL training and environmental audits for utlising the Green Award scheme.

"Enhancing the safety, quality and sustainability of ship operations is at the heart of what we do at DNV GL – therefore, working with the Green Award Foundation was a logical step for us," Ioannis Chiotopoulos, Regional Manager for the East Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Sea at DNV GL – Maritime.

"The scheme offers an excellent opportunity to reward companies which set best practice examples for shipping, and I hope it encourages many more companies to invest in future-proof technologies."

Green Award's Chairman, Captain Dimitrios Mattheou, said that DNV GL's participation with Green Awards is a significant development towards the wider uptake of corporate social responsibility principles within the shipping industry.

"It demonstrates support to ship managers and owners prepared to invest efforts and means in better performance, and helps in making these investments economically sound," said Mattheou.

DNV GL joins a number of other incentive providers from across the shipping industry that work with the Green Award Foundation, providing certificate holders benefits such as discounts on port dues, products, and services.

In May, Ship & Bunker reported that France-based Ecoslops, which produces recycled bunkers from slops at its refinery in Sinès, Portugal, had signed an incentive agreement with the Green Award Foundation, under which Ecoslops agreed to provide a 25 percent discount on wastes delivered via Green Award certified ships.
