TRIYARDS Holdings Limited (TRIYARDS) Sunday announced that its Strategic Marine subsidiary has been awarded a €44 million ($50.19 million) contract with Rederij Doeksen (Royal Doeksen) for the construction of two "eco-friendly" liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered RoPax ferries.

"We foresee an increased focus in the environmental aspects of marine transportation and LNG emerging as the fuel of choice for vessels and ferries," said Mark Schiller, CEO for Strategic Marine.

"Our focus on the large ferry market is beginning to reap the desired results with this recent win, as we continue to focus on the vertical product chain for aluminium vessels."

Designed by UK-based BMT Nigel Gee Ltd, the two aluminium catamarans are said to feature a single-fuel LNG propulsion system, enabling increased efficiency compared to dual-fuel engines.

With a 600 passenger and 64 car capacity, the two vessels will meet "stringent" emissions requirements, says TRIYARDS, noting that construction is scheduled to begin this summer, with delivery slated for the second quarter of 2018.

In December, TRIYARDS announced that it had been awarded a $21.82 million contract by Taiwanese oil and gas company CPC Corporation (CPC) for the construction of two bunker barges.
