E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) Tuesday announced that, through its subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), it has completed the first installations of its in-line, multi-engine marine scrubber on three auxiliary engines of two newbuild bulk carriers.

DuPont says that its proprietary design reduces turbulence and back-pressure of entering exhaust, enabling multiple exhaust streams to use one slim in-line scrubber tower without requiring large-footprint fans or venturis.

"The DuPont Marine Scrubber design has always been in-line, and now we extend our low back-pressure, no-fans philosophy to the multi-stream design. This allows shippers to significantly save on footprint and can help avoid funnel modifications for retrofits," said Tom Saley, BELCO President.

"We are excited to have the first of this design installed and look forward to its commissioning in early 2017."

DuPont says it has submitted a patent application for its scrubber inlet configuration, and notes that it will be showcasing the new design at the 2016 SMM trade fair in Hamburg, Germany.

In August, Ship & Bunker reported that Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. (Vulica), which operates vessels within the North American Emission Control Area (ECA), will have an exhaust gas scrubber from DuPont Clean Technologies fitted to their bulk carrier M/V H.A. Sklenar.
