ECA Operator Selects DuPont Scrubber for Bulker Retrofit
E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) Thursday announced that Vulica Shipping Co. Ltd. (Vulca), which operates vessels within the North American Emission Control Area (ECA), will have an exhaust gas scrubber from DuPont Clean Technologies fitted to their bulk carrier M/V H.A. Sklenar.
The scrubber installation is slated for completion by April 2017.
Vulca says the scrubber, which was designed by DuPont subsidiary Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), will allow for "maximum fuel flexibility" to meet current ECA requirements and the upcoming 0.50 percent global sulfur cap expected in 2020.
It will also enable the vessel to meet all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and ECA requirements pertaining to washwater and scrubbers.
"This type of DuPont Marine Scrubber hybrid design provides the most flexibility when a vessel is in an Emission Control Area (ECA), because it can operate in both open or closed loop mode," said Garrett Billemeyer, Technology Development Manager at BELCO.
"All DuPont Marine Scrubbers are mechanically designed for the full exhaust gas temperature, allowing the scrubber to also operate 'dry.' This makes it possible for vessels to move in and out of an ECA with ease, without requiring additional by-pass exhaust ducting and equipment at times when flue gas treatment is unnecessary."
In July, Ship & Bunker reported that BELCO had won a contract from U.S.-based Interlake Steamship Company (Interlake) to fit two 1,000-foot bulkers - the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha and M/V Mesabi Miner - with DuPont Marine scrubbers for ECA compliance.
