Belco Technologies Corporation (BELCO), a subsidiary of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont), Thursday announced that it has won a contract from U.S.-based Interlake Steamship Company (Interlake) to fit two 1,000-foot bulkers - the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha and M/V Mesabi Miner - with DuPont Marine scrubbers for emission control area (ECA) compliance.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, Interlake will have a total of five of its vessels fitted with scrubbers by the end of 2017, including the M/V Paul R. Tregurtha and M/V Mesabi Miner.

"We are thrilled to continue to build upon the successful emission-reduction program we began with BELCO in 2015," said Mark W. Barker, President of Interlake.

"With a third of our fleet already in operation, we are excited to continue working with BELCO as we standardise this proven and reliable technology throughout our fleet."

BELCO says it will be installing two closed-loop, in-line scrubbers on each of the two vessels during the winter of 2017.

The company further notes that the scrubbers meet all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and International Maritime Organization (IMO) wash water emission standards, and will allow Interlake to continue to utilise HFO bunkers while maintaining compliance with North American ECA requirements.

"The DuPont scrubbers support Interlake’s long-term vision to create the most efficient and environmentally responsible fleet on the Great Lakes," explained BELCO.

In June, Interlake announced that the M/V James R. Barker became the first among three of the company's vessels to already be outfitted with an exhaust gas scrubber system - part of the company's decision to utilise the technology for compliance with North American ECA regulations.
