Danish tanker operator Terntank Rederi A/S says two new LNG-powered tankers that it has ordered will be "the world's most environmentally friendly tankers."

The 15,000 deadweight-tonne vessels, to be delivered in February and May 2016, will reduce emissions of particulate matter (PM) by 90 percent, 80 percent for nitrogen oxides (NOx), and 35 percent for carbon dioxide (CO2), and will comply with IMO Tier III regulations.

"We will be using a large propeller together with a large main engine that only needs 65% of the maximum effect to reach a service speed of 14.5 knots," said the company's managing director, Jens P Buchhave.

"With LNG having a 10 to 15 percent better energy value compared to marine gas oil and with an optimized underwater hull design the vessels will have a fuel consumption of between 13.5 and 14.0 ton per day compared to today's 22 ton for existing vessels of similar size."

Terntank said it is the first ship operator to order vessels within the Zero Vision Tool (ZVT) project platform, and it is working with other project participants for a 90 percent reduction in port costs and fairway dues.

ZVT, a collaboration platform created by SSPA and the Swedish Shipowners' Association, allows maritime industry players and authorities to collaborate on energy efficiency solutions, according to its website.

Wärtsilä Corp. has said the Terntank ships will be the first to use its new 2-stroke, low pressure, liquefied natural gas (LNG)-capable dual-fuel engines.
