Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) last week said it has signed an agreement with Carnival Corporation & plc (Carnival) to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers to the cruise line's AIDAprima vessel.

"One cruise liner with 7,000 to 8,000 people on board can use the same amount of fuel as a small city with a population of around 30,000," said Maarten Wetselaar, Integrated Gas Director for Shell, in a speech in Perth, Australia Thursday.

"These ships are essentially floating power stations. So policies to reduce marine emissions will make LNG an attractive fuel for shipping, potentially opening up major new markets for our industry."

Going forwards, Shell says it sees promising opportunities to provide LNG as fuel for not only ships, but also trucks and buses, which it estimates utilise the equivalent of 700 million tonnes of LNG annually in oil products.

"Our industry mustn't be shy about the key role this source of energy should play in the global energy transition," said Wetselaar.

On Monday, Ship & Bunker reported that Shell, Qatargas, and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to investigate the viability of the development of LNG bunkers in the Middle East region and conversion of United Arab Shipping Company Line's (UASC Line's) existing vessels to LNG propulsion.
