Crowley Maritime Corp. (Crowley) says it has joined the Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG), a business-to-business initiative aimed at reducing environmental impacts of global shipping.

Crowley says its new membership supports and builds on the company's efforts to prioritise and utilise technology for more environmentally friendly operations and to foster partnerships for reducing vessel emissions.

"We are excited about the opportunity to join other leading cargo carriers and shippers in this collaborative, industry-shaping initiative," said Dan Smith, environmental director at Crowley.

"Clean Cargo Working Group membership is an important part of our strategy to align Crowley's measurement and management of environmental performance with industry best practices and to better serve Crowley customers who are working to improve environmental performance throughout their supply chains."

Crowley says its membership in CCWG will enable the company to benchmark its environmental performance in relation to its ocean container operations and provide standardised performance reporting to customers.

Further, Crowley notes its new membership will provide the company with the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of "consistent, practicable, value-added" metrics and methodologies for environmental performance measurement.

"Active carrier engagement and collaboration is key for CCWG to succeed in its efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of global goods transportation," said Angie Farrag-Thibault, director at BSR (Business for Social Responsibility) and lead coordinator of the CCWG.

"We're delighted to welcome Crowley as a member of CCWG and look forward to the company's contributions to CCWG's important work."

In August, Crowley announced that it had taken delivery of the fuel efficient and liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion ready tanker West Virginia.
