The Society for Gas as a Marine Fuel (SGMF) Thursday announced in an emailed statement the release of the first edition of its LNG Bunkering - Safety Guidelines publication.

"The objective of the guidelines is to provide the bunkering industry with the best practices in order to ensure that gas-fuelled ships are re-fuelled with high levels of safety, integrity and reliability," said SGMF.

The manual covers hazards such as leaks and fires, safety systems including personnel and command structures, and bunkering procedures.

In addition it gives specific guidance on ship-to-ship, shore-to-ship, and truck-to-ship bunkering.

The guidelines are the first output from one of six working groups at the SGMF with members drawn from the Swedish Maritime Authority, Norwegian Maritime Authority, Shell, MOL Group, Lloyd's Register, DNV GL, Alkane Marine, and the International Association of Ports and Harbors (IAPH).

The publication comes at "a critical time for the industry to have reliable guidelines that everyone can follow," said the society's General Manager, Mark Bell.

The guidelines are freely available to members of SGMF.

In October, SGMF officially launched at the Singapore SIBCON conference.

In November, the society announced it was expanding its scope into the U.S. with the appointment of Margaret Doyle as vice chair of its Training and Competency working group.
