Wärtsilä Corporation announced Thursday that it would be providing dual-fuel engines for what it says is the world's first dredger to run on both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and conventional marine fuel.

The Scheldt River is reportedly being built by Netherlands-based Royal IHC for Belgium's DEME Group, and will have a volume capacity of 8,000 cubic metres.

"Environmental considerations are extremely important for every new vessel built today," said Jan Gabriël, Head of New Building and Conversion Department at DEME.

"Operating on LNG allows DEME to set new standards in minimising harmful emissions."

In addition to the engine system, the vessel will also feature Wärtsilä propellers, transverse thrusters, and its LNGPac gas supply and storage system.

"Scheldt River will easily comply with all local and international environmental regulations," Gabriël said.

Wärtsilä added that the order was the second "notable" order in recent months for dredger-related propulsion solutions.

Earlier this year, the company also announced a new Emission Control Area (ECA) fuel pump which it said would be an important enabler for the use of LNG as a marine fuel.
