DNV GL Monday announced that two newbuild dual-fueled bulk carriers being built for ESL Shipping Oy (ESL), will not only be the first large liquid natural gas (LNG) propelled bulkers, but also the first vessels to be built to DNV GL's new rules for general dry cargo ships with DNV GL ice class 1A.

As Ship & Bunker reported in November, Finland-based ESL placed a €60 million ($63.65 million) order for two LNG propelled "extremely energy-efficient" 25,600 DWT bulkers, both slated for delivery in early 2018.

"It is fitting that the first vessels that will be constructed to the most forward looking set of classification rules are themselves at the cutting edge of maritime innovation," said Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO for DNV GL – Maritime.

"We have created these rules to be ready for the future and we have long pioneered the use of LNG as a ship fuel. To see these two come together in a double first for the industry is a remarkable moment."

The two newbuild vessels will have type C LNG tanks with a 400 m3 capacity, said to enable bunkering at several terminals within the Baltic region where the ships are set to operate.

"These vessels will set new standards for efficiency and environmental performance," said Morten Løvstad, Business Director Bulk Carriers at DNV GL.

"They are an important step forward in showing how shipping can be a force for sustainability today and in the future."

In October, DNV GL announced the release of a technical and feasibility study for a new LNG powered 20,000 TEU mega box ship concept with a novel "Engine Room Free" propulsion system.
