NYK and K Line Highlight CO2 Reduction Achievements
Both crediting the use of big data in reducing fuel consumption, Japanese shipping majors Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have recently released reports highlighting their respective efforts in CO2 reduction within their shipping activities.
NYK says it achieved a 14.3 percent reduction in CO2 emissions in 2015, while K Line says it gleaned a 13.6 percent reduction during the period, compared to 2011 levels.
In addition to the use of big data, K Line says it will continue to pursue further emissions reductions through the use of new energy-saving vessels, the installation of fuel efficiency-boosting technologies on existing vessels, and continued consideration for energy diversification, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion.
Having reached its CO2 emission reduction target of 10 percent by 2019 against 2011 levels ahead of schedule, K Line says it has set a new reduction target of 25 percent by 2030.
Further, K Line says it is aiming to cut its CO2 emissions in half from 2011 levels by the year 2050.
NYK says, in addition to the use of its Ship Information Management System (SIMS), it has achieved its CO2 reduction by utilising the latest energy-saving technologies within its existing fleet.
The company says it has worked "to contribute to the global environment and the creation of sustainable societies by managing environmental risks and arriving at an optimal balance between environment and economy."
"This accomplishment is the result of cooperative efforts by shipowners, ship-management companies, crews, and ship operators, among others," stated NYK, adding that it will also continue to work toward further CO2 reductions by utilising "creative solutions," aiming for a 15 percent fuel-efficiency improvement above the 2010 level by 2018.
In May, Ship & Bunker reported that both NYK and K Line were among the six carriers that have combined to form a new container carrier alliance, known as "THE Alliance."
