Maersk Line has announced an updated 2020 goal to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per container moved by 60 percent compared to 2007 levels.

The aim of the target is to create a "sustained decoupling of economic growth from CO2 emissions," according to the company.

Maersk Line originally set a 25 percent reduction target by 2020, but surpassed the goal early in 2013.

It then went to on beat its updated reduction target of 40 percent earlier this year.

"Maersk Line shares aspirations for sustainable, profitable growth with many of our customers," said Chief Commercial Officer Stephen Schueler.

"By committing to reducing supply-chain emissions, we're demonstrating our commitment to delivering tangible carbon savings."

Early this year, Maersk Group reported in its 2014 annual report that it had improved its CO2 efficiency by 5 percent, with Maersk Line in particular having generated 8 percent efficiency improvements.
