Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) [TYO:9101] announced it has received the highest rating on the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation's Environmental Assessment Loan, reflecting the shipping line's adoption of environmental preservation efforts including technology to improve fuel efficiency.

The assessment, which NYK Line has now won three years in a row, reflects its progress toward a goal of increasing fuel efficiency by 10 percent from 2010 to 2015.

Among the company's environmentally friendly efforts are air lubrication systems that reduce friction between the vessel bottom and the sea, an onboard broadband communication system designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions during ship operations, and an "Innovative Bunker and Idle-time Saving" (IBIS) project, which shares real-time information between land and ships to economize ship movements.

NYK Line has also received ISO 14001 certification for about 800 ships, group companies, and chartering services, and has created a management system to provide extensive data on emissions and other environmental impacts.

The company, which received a first-of-its-kind Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) certification last year, has said its fuel-efficiency efforts allow it to differentiate its service in the face of high bunker prices.
