Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) has announced that its fuel-saving X62 two-stroke engines are now ready for full market availability following successful testing.

"These engines feature a high stroke-to-bore ratio, thus achieving a lower engine speed and reduced brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC)," said Wärtsilä.

The company also said that the incorporated common-rail fuel injection system "facilitates high levels of combustion efficiency to give exceptional fuel savings across the entire load range of the engine."

The company said that it has already received 16 orders for the X62 and 127 orders across the X-Generation range of engines launched in 2012.

The first X62 engines to enter service will power four 115,000 deadweight tonne long-range product tankers being built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. for Greek ship owner Kyklades Maritime Corp. (Kyklades).

Kyklades will use the six cylinder version of the X62 to provide a nominal maximum continuous peer rating of 12,360 kW.

"The X62 is an important addition to Wärtsilä's engine portfolio and a valuable answer to the marine sector's need to increase fuel efficiency and minimise emissions," said Martin Wernli, Vice President for Wärtsilä Ship Power's two-stroke business.

Last month Wärtsilä said the "world is switching to natural gas."
